When hosting, share gift guidance

The first part of The Kids Party Pact is to: “share ‘gift guidance’ for my kid’s parties to encourage more sustainable, affordable gifts”.

Here’s how:

Decide on your gift guidance.

You don’t have to say ‘no gifts’, but you absolutely can if you want to!

There are plenty of other ways you can influence the type, the volume and the cost of gifts at your child’s party. Take a look at our alternative gift ideas for inspiration.

Communicate your gift guidance

Whether you’re sending traditional paper invites,  an email or a casual WhatsApp – include your gift guidance upfront.

10 ideas for gift guidance wording for your invite.

Remind people

Send a reminder the week before the party.  As busy parents, it’s quite likely they’ll have forgotten your gift guidance or didn’t absorb it in the first place!

This can be as simple as a quick WhatsApp to say “Looking forward to seeing you on [Date & Time] for [child’s name]’s party. And just a reminder, [insert gift guidance here]!

Give low-cost, planet friendly party favours

The typical party bag is a haven for plastic tat. We’re here to call an end to that!

That’s why the second element of The Kids Party Pact is: “Give second-hand, homemade or sustainable party favours – or none at all.”

Here’s how:

  • Plan ahead – avoid last-minute panic purchases
  • Look for second-hand items at charity shops, Vinted, marketplace etc.
  • Avoid plastic (unless second-hand)
  • Keep it small – they don’t need a bag full of bits. One nice party favour is fine – or dare we suggest scrapping the party bag altogether?!
  • Think about alternatives to the traditional party bag. For example
    • Get a range of books from a charity shop to wrap and have as a lucky dip
    • Seeds to grow something at home
    • Something consumable (but age-appropriate)

Gift-giving at other children’s parties

The third and final element of the Kids Party Pact is to: “Give pre-loved, homemade, sustainable presents whenever possible – or no gift at all.”

Even if they haven’t shared any gift guidance, you can still live up to this element of the pact!

  • Plan  – avoid panic buying!
  • Ask – If you feel you should take something, and you’re not sure what – ask the parent(s) what would be welcome. You can check out Vinted, marketplace to get a pre-loved bargain in good condition.
  • If you have left it to the last minute…is there anything you can give from home? I.e. A book or toy your child is willing to part with. Or, can you get to a second-hand bookshop?
  • Give something you’d be happy for your child to receive.

We hope that helps!
